Building Virtual Worlds

I took Building Virtual Worlds during the Fall 2004 semester at Carnegie Mellon University. BVW is a project course, where interdisciplinary teams of 4-5 students build interactive virtual worlds. Over the course of the semester, five rounds of worlds were built, each round given 2-3 weeks from start to finish to complete. While a major goal of this course is for students to be creative and invent cool experiences, the real goal of this class was for students to learn how to work together in a group environment.

My primary responsibility in this class was to texture and light all the models created in my worlds, but I aided my groups in any way I possibly could. The worlds I was a part of creating were:

Quasi-Oke
(Ji-Young Lee, Greg Lindley, Anand Patel, Christine Skarulis)

The first theatrical piece starring Quasi, the ETC in-house animatronic robot. Quasi-oke was the grande finale at the BVW 2004 Final Show. Download movie (quicktime, 19.1 mb)

Star Wars Lightsaber Demo
(Anand Patel, Seth Shain, Jim Valenti)

A virtual-reality experience of Luke Skywalker's lightsaber training against the seeker droid in Star Wars: A New Hope. This demo is the premiere VR demo shown to VIP guests at the ETC. Download movie (quicktime, 2.6 mb)

The Mine
(Val Kaplan, Phil Saltzman, Dan Sorge)

A virtual-reality experience simulating a mine elevator falling, complete with a functional drop platform. This world has been used a demo shown to VIP guests at the ETC. Download movie (divx, 4.4 mb)

Cannon Blast!
(Mo Adeleye, Mike Duke, Tim Lander)

A two-on-two competitive game on the Jam-O-Drum, an in-house four-player gaming station at the ETC. The goal of the game is to sink the opposing teams' ships with cannonballs.

Jamplitude
(Josh Hailpern, Seth Shain, Tim Sweeney)

A four-player cooperative rhythm-matching game on the Jam-O-Drum.
